SASKIA HAHN
Visual arts and music are constantly interacting and influencing one another, today more than ever. But which of the two passions should take the lead?
For Saskia Hahn, being a musician directly fuels her career as a visual artist – Saskia, AKA the guitarist, singer and songwriter of the three piece rock band “Sweet Machine”, was also playing the world’s stages with the Canadian electro-clash performance artist and activist Peaches, during 2008 and 2017 on guitar, keyboards and vocals.
While touring the world with Peaches in a show equally thrilling and disturbing, and which notably opened the Art Basel Miami art extravaganza, Saskia consistently stole time to seek out additional inspiration at the museums, galleries and exhibitions in the cities dotted along the tour’s itinerary. Here she soaked up the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, artists who continue to exert a major influence on pop culture not limited simply to the art scene, but also extending to the world of music. Where, after all, would the 80s, 90s and even the MTV Generation be without these aesthetics?
The result was a burst of ideas looking for a way out and screaming to be channeled visually in a variety of forms. Buoyed by the success of her debut solo exhibition in 2010 in Berlin, Saskia resolved to continue creating a broad range of pieces using an eclectic media palette involving painting, screenprinting, installations and mixed media. Her entry into the international art world has since taken Saskia Hahn’s works to exhibitions from Berlin to New York, London and Sydney.
In the meantime she decided not only to write her new songs herself but also to produce them. With her new band „The Heartways“ she released two singles „Maybe“ and „By Your Side“ in 2020. The album „Damaged Goods“ is in the final making and will be released in the first half of 2022.
